with Monique Horsemanship Creating Safer, Happier Horses — One Ride at a Time
Monique provides a one of a kind training experience. Specialties and areas of focus include colt starting, ground work, problem horses, sale horses, and performance horses (of all disciplines)
Monique's Mission - At Monique Horsemanship, the mission is simple: to create safer, happier horses and foster stronger, more trusting partnerships between horses and riders.
With a focus on understanding horse behavior, Monique helps riders interpret what their horses are truly communicating—filling in the gaps that many other training programs overlook. Whether you're working with a performance prospect or a problem horse, Monique prioritizes building a foundation of mutual respect and trust, starting from the ground up.
Every horse is unique, and so is every training journey. What takes five minutes one day might take an hour the next. Monique honors each horse’s individual pace and will always give honest, expert feedback—whether that means progressing to the next step or reassessing the rider-horse pairing.
Specialties - Monique specializes in working with:
Problem horses – including dangerous or resistant behaviors
Performance horses – both English and Western disciplines
Young, unstarted horses – providing a solid foundation for future success
The Training Program - This tailored program is ideal for young horses, green horses, and those exhibiting behavioral issues. The goal is to give each horse the tools, time, and experience they need to succeed—both in and out of the arena.
A key part of Monique’s approach involves consistent exposure to real-world experiences and integration into a herd environment. This helps horses learn how to truly "be horses" while gaining confidence in diverse settings.
Most horses require a minimum of 60 days of training. Groundwork always comes first—riding only begins once the horse is mentally and physically prepared. Training Areas Include:
Spooking and desensitization
Halter breaking
Starting young or unhandled horses
Ground manners and leading skills
Safe tying and trailer loading
Bucking, biting, kicking, and other behavioral issues
Trail confidence and show-ring preparation
Easing anxiety in unfamiliar environments
Monique customizes each program based on the horse’s specific needs and background. It’s not about rushing to 30 rides—it's about quality, consistency, and progress at the horse’s pace.
Tools & Techniques - Monique utilizes a variety of methods and equipment to build trust, respect, and safety in every horse. Her techniques are designed to simulate real-life scenarios, giving horses the confidence they need to thrive. Services and Methods Include:
Groundwork fundamentals
Round pen liberty work
Long lining
Desensitization using tarps, flags, ropes, bags, and other stimuli
Safety-focused tying and loading
Ponying from another horse—on trails, in pastures, and on the road

Why Choose Monique? - Whether you're dealing with a horse that bucks, spooks, or simply needs a restart, Monique brings patience, skill, and a no-shortcuts philosophy to every session. Her commitment is to the horse first—always prioritizing safety, understanding, and long-term success over fast results. If you're ready to create a deeper, safer partnership with your horse, Monique Horsemanship is here to guide the journey.
Groundwork: The Foundation of a Safer HorseWhy Groundwork Matters At Monique Horsemanship, groundwork isn’t just the first step—it’s the most important one. It builds trust, communication, and respect between horse and handler before anyone ever gets in the saddle. It also prepares horses for the unexpected, making them safer for riders and everyone around them. Let me share a story that truly illustrates why groundwork is so essential.
A student of mine, Rachel, had been riding with me for years. One day, while riding a well-trained mare named Coco, Rachel suffered a seizure and fell from the saddle. Tragically, her foot remained caught in the stirrup—a terrifying and dangerous situation for any rider.
Now, imagine what could’ve happened if Coco had panicked, even just trotting away. The outcome could have been catastrophic. But because of the calm, respectful mindset we had developed through groundwork, Coco simply stopped and stood still. She didn’t run. She didn’t spook. She waited quietly while we freed Rachel’s foot.
That’s the power of groundwork.
Real-World Preparation At the Monique Horsemanship, when starting colts or working with problem horses, we aim to prepare them for as many real-life situations as possible. Some of our methods might look unusual, but each serves a purpose rooted in safety and trust.
Examples of Groundwork Techniques:
Leg Roping: We gently rope a colt’s legs together to simulate what it feels like when movement is restricted—like getting caught in a fence or a hay net. Instead of panicking, the horse learns to pause, yield, and think through the pressure.
Desensitization Training: We use tarps, ropes, plastic bags, flags, and other “scary” objects to expose horses to surprising sights, sounds, and sensations in a controlled environment. This prevents spooking later in unpredictable settings.
Real-World Scenarios: From jackets being taken off in the saddle to flapping stirrup bags or flags, a horse trained through groundwork will respond calmly. A horse that kicks at a harmless flag is just as likely to kick at something more dangerous—like a person.
Groundwork doesn’t dull your horse—it sharpens their ability to think before reacting. It builds a calm, confident horse who is still alert but not explosive. In many cases, this training has prevented injury or even saved lives.
Tools & Techniques Monique May Use While working with you and your horse at the Lazy Sum B, Monique may incorporate a variety of tools to build trust and safety through groundwork:
Multiple arenas and pastures to vary the environment
High lines, patience poles, and tying practice (teaches horses to stand quietly at shows, trailers, and events)
Leading and ground manners on the rope
Round pen work, including hooking on to build connection
Safe and respectful lunging techniques
Desensitization with flags, tarps, ropes, logs, and more
Trailering practice using different types of trailers
Each of these exercises is designed to strengthen the bond between horse and human, preparing your horse to be calm, thoughtful, and responsive in any setting.
⚠️ A Note About Dangerous Behavior Please be aware: there is an upcharge for horses exhibiting dangerous behaviors. While Monique is passionate about helping challenging horses, she will not put herself—or her family—at unnecessary risk. Safety is always the top priority, for both the trainer and the horse.
